I just play solo until I got some money to buy a good armor (that's what you need at first) and a horse. If you manage to be able to raise your max army size to 80+ then go get Beornings they got good stats and blunt weapons if I remember correctly.
The best way to earn money when you have a small band of high rank soldiers is to get paid by kingdom and to take prisoners.
